Gord (Downie) as Gerry (Cheevers) Oil on canvas 11 x 14Bids start at $300.00From Monday, August 1st – Saturday, August 20th, bids can be made at:
In May, when it was revealed that Gord Downie had brain cancer, Leslie Jones restaurant owner George Wensley asked his artist friends to help him with a fundraiser on behalf of Gord. George asked each artist to do a portrait of Gord and planned an exhibition in his restaurant. I thought it was terrific idea for obvious reasons. I have been a fan of the Tragically Hip since I was a student at Queen’s University and saw them perform in their early days on campus. In addition, my cousin’s son, Tyler Hand had passed away from the same form of cancer.
My painting Gord (Downie) as Gerry (Cheevers) pays tribute to Gord taking on the identity of 1970’s Boston Bruins goaltender, Gerry Cheevers. I knew Gord was a huge Bruins fan but I didn’t realize the true connection until I read an interview which revealed his godparents are legendary Bruins GM Harry Sinden and his wife.
Although the exhibition never came to be, my painting can be seen at Leslie Jones restaurant till August 20th. The proceeds will go to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research – Sunnybrook Foundation.
